Are your cars built like the original Grand Sports with the aluminum birdcage sitting on a round tube ladder frame?
We build both a one-piece fiberglass bodied car and the birdcage version. Serial numbers 006, 007, 008, and 009 will be birdcage cars just like the originals. On the birdcage cars, a front and rear clip hangs from the birdcage. Serial numbers 010 and up are one-piece monocoque bodies. On these bodies the firewall, floor, rear deck, inner fenders and on the coupe a headliner and package tray is all bonded together in an extremely rigid structure. All our cars feature the original Grand Sport round tube style frame.

You can’t hang Ferrari suspension components on a shop built frame and expect it to handle like a Ferrari, and it doesn’t work for Corvettes either. The suspension system must be engineered for the entire car in which it is being installed. The suspension is designed to be used with a particular frame, roll center, center of gravity, wheelbase, track, etc. Our cars have been engineered as a whole, and have been tested and tweaked for six years against the fastest racecars in vintage racing today. The result is that our car is stable at 190 MPH and handles like a dream; however, if we bolted Ferrari suspension components on our frame, it still would not handle like a Ferrari.

In 1964, as a privateer, Roger Penske led the first lap of Sebring in Grand Sport 005 ahead of 8 factory rear engine Ferrari prototypes. Dan Gurney in a Cobra was ninth! Other than durability, there was never anything wrong with the Grand Sport suspension design. Back in the day, the original suspension was made from .110 cold rolled steel. Those same components are now made from .125 inch chrome moly, doubled where appropriate for additional strength and durability.

Several. The LightWeights were prototypes of our current Grand Sport racecars and were a work in process. We did not have the benefit of original GM blueprints or body molds. To gain high speed stability, at various times we made aerodynamic modifications such as drooping the leading edge of the body. We tested various front spoilers among other things. Now we have the original factory blueprints along with plaster molds and profile templates made from the body of the only unwrecked original Grand Sport in existence. From these plaster molds we made precise modern production molds to insure that the Duntov built authentic original Grand Sports have consistent and correct bodies.

Our racecars in the original configuration weigh just over 2200 lbs. Built to modern vintage racing safety standards, the car weighs between 2250 and 2550 lbs, depending on a number of options; engines, etc. Street versions of the Duntov built Grand Sport weigh between 2400 and 2600 lbs, depending on the engine and transmission package.

Replica cars are not generally approved for vintage racing, however ‘continuation’ cars generally are, as long as they are true to the original specifications. There are over a hundred vintage racing organizations in the US, each with its own rules. Over the past six years we have presented our cars at the most prestigious venues of vintage racing with four different vintage racing organizations, including two of the largest in the US. We have been approved for competition by all four organizations. After seeing and approving our car, SVRA published a policy change statement in which they said “If we are going to continue seeing these great cars in actual competition, a provision must be made for viable replacements.”

We have been approved for competition in Australia by CAMS, the Confederation of Australian Motorsport. One of our prototype LightWeights competed in the 2007 Targa Tasmania rally.
Duntov built Corvette Grand Sport serial number 010 was certified and approved for vintage racing by the FIA and was campaigned throughout Europe in 2009. It will be joined by Grand Sport serial number 013 in Europe in 2010.

You can. You can order a complete racecar, a roller, or any part of the car.

Our cars are hand built, one at a time. Complete cars start at about $120,000. Incomplete rollers can be purchased for half that, or you can purchase a body or a rolling chassis, or any combination of parts on which you can start your own Grand Sport project. Contact us for pricing of Grand Sport parts and incomplete cars.

Yes, and we encourage you to do so. We are located about 20 minutes from DFW airport.

Our cars are just like the original cars, which as you know, were racecars not intended to be driven on the street. That’s not to say you couldn’t license them and do just that. Our cars can be ordered with a pump gas engine, mufflers, turn signals, wipers and a horn if that’s what you want. The car will not be the most comfortable driving car in your garage, but it will no doubt be the fastest! We can supply air conditioning, electric windows, power steering and brakes – all of the modern conveniences expected in a world class GT car.

Right now we can build about 4 original cars a year, and that’s about it. Superformance expects to build about 100 cars a year, about half coupes and half roadsters.

Duntov built racecars take at least 3 months to build. We normally have bodies, frames and at least a few complete cars in stock, so we can sometimes speed that up if you have a hard deadline. Rollers and incomplete cars obviously take much less time.

You can have it any way you like; just give us a picture or a drawing. We have the paint codes for the historic cars, and we can use one of those, or you can make history and pick something new. We do our own painting in-house.
Serial numbered Corvette Grand Sports are completed cars.

Almost unlimited. The closest thing to an original 1963 spec Grand Sport engine would be a 377 cu. in. aluminum small block with Weber carburetors. We can supply that, or you might prefer a modern LS7, or one of the historic GM aluminum 427 big blocks. You tell us. We get our engines directly from GM. Tell us what you want and we will get it.

These are racecars, and are not intended for the street. We will support your car with parts and service advisories. When new parts are developed, they will be made available to you. Racing is a dangerous sport, and if you choose to race one of our cars, the risk is exclusively yours. We will provide you with the appropriate disclaimers when you take delivery of your car. GM crate engine options carry the manufacturer’s warranty.
